When we decided to build a new home, we were somewhat nervous because we had been in real estate for over 25 years and had seen and heard horror stories about the building process and contractors in general.

Many builders will show a low initial home price but then either cut corners or include allowances for flooring, lighting, cabinets, etc. that are insufficient, causing you out-of-pocket added payments.
