People
Adam Smith
Founder And Ceo
Ever since Adam Smith can remember, home remodeling has been a foundational part of his life. Raised by a contractor, Adam grew up with a tool belt on his waist and an ever-growing passion for residential construction. He worked for his dad every summer until he was 18, facilitating home improvements and helping with installations. Needless to say, he was hooked. At age 18, Adam went into the family business full-time, working his way up from carpenter’s helper to carpenter, and ultimately project manager. Along the way, he taught himself AutoCad and began designing, which he did for his father until he eventually pursued related opportunities.
Shannon Embly
Lead Designer
Growing up, Shannon Embly always had a penchant for two things: transforming spaces and connecting with people. Now the Lead Designer for Slate Design & Remodel, she does both every day, pairing her creative instincts with an undeniable ability to get to the heart of each client’s needs.
After receiving her degree from the Art Institute of Washington in Interior Design, Shannon took an internship at Tart Lumber Company, where she honed her kitchen design skills and realized that remodeling was the industry for her. Soon after, she met Adam Smith. As the team’s lead designer, Shannon guides clients from start to finish —advising them on everything from layout to fixtures, tiling, and beyond. Her favorite part of the job? Translating a client’s vision into reality — and watching it come to life before their very eyes.

Slate Design remodeled our Master Bathroom and our Kitchen over the last year. Both the remodels turned out exactly as we wanted. truly stunning. The heated floors of the master bath have been a great improvement. The kitchen island is a cooker and bakers dream. The employees were all polite and the communication was amazing. They always let us know the status and both jobs were completed on schedule. We would recommend Slate Design & Remodel for your next project. Kelly & Cheryl H.

Now that our basement renovation is complete, we really enjoy our new bathroom, closet, lighting and flooring! Your quality work and the professional manner in which you managed the entire project, from your initial consultations with us, to the daily updates, and the outstanding recommendations for the final design impressed us like no other contractor we've dealt with.
At each stage, you made us feel confident we were dealing with a team that truly cares about customer satisfaction, values straight-forward communication, and works with complete integrity. Thank you for the great work! Rose

We used Slate Design & Remodel to finish our basement. We couldn't be happier with the result. Adam (owner), Jessica (operations manager) and Shannon (designer) were easy to work with and delivered what they promised. Most of the trade people that worked on our basement were top notch, especially the gentleman who laid the tile in the bathroom, the plumbers and the floor contractor.
Whatever issues came up were immediately rectified to our satisfaction. We would not hesitate to use Slate Design & Remodel for any future home project. We highly recommend them.

We contracted with Capital Design to completely remodel our kitchen and we couldn't be happier with the end result. From the start, we were initially impressed with Capital Design's detailed proposal. Our positive experience continued with Shannon's expert design recommendations and her ability to help and improve on our ideas to make our dream kitchen a reality.
When it came to project construction, Adam, Alex and Jessica were organized and went over every detail of the plans with us and their team. Every member of the team who worked on the project was professional and knowledgeable, listening to our concerns and showing their expertise in their craft. The team always answered our questions right away and let us be as involved as we wanted for every step of the project.
The team at Capital Design ended the job by pouring over every last detail, making sure the kitchen was perfect and ready for us to enjoy! We love the kitchen and would recommend Adam and his team at Capital Design as a great business to design and renovate your kitchen!

From start to finish, the Capital Design crew set realistic expectations and was very responsive with day-to-day communications about our kitchen and main level renovation. Shannon, the interior designer, helped design a space that encompassed every aspect of our dream kitchen down to the smallest details. She chose quality products and materials within the budget and helped add little touches to make it all shine. Jacob, the project manager, was on site most days checking in with us and the crew to make sure everything was on track and that we were happy and comfortable with everything going on.
Every contractor that came to work was polite and professional. We are so grateful for the beautiful spaces that Capital Design created in our home, and highly recommend them to anyone looking for an honest, hardworking, and skilled design and remodeling company.

Capital Design did a full remodel of our master bathroom, as well as a variety of other smaller projects in our house. We had been putting off all this work (especially the master bath) because I remembered how much work it was when we remodeled our kitchen many years ago.but, our initial meeting Capital Design convinced me to go for it because they handled so much of the work for us - especially the shopping!
It saved me from dragging the kids around from shop to shop looking at tile, finishes, lighting fixtures, etc. Capital Design drew up design concepts, and then handled all the procurement of the materials. In addition to the master bathroom, they re-did our powder room, windows, doors, stairs and walkway with flagstone, and stair railings. The design process was fun and Jessica and Shannon did a great job matching our taste to the style of our house. The work was installed professionally and we love the end results.

Adam, Jessica, Shannon and the Team at Capital Design have been a joy to work with during our fairly extensive Kitchen Remodel. Our kitchen was small, did not have enough cabinet space for our needs, had a peninsula and a pony wall that sectioned off the room into tiny components, and we always seemed to have stuff on our counter tops just making our kitchen not very pleasant to be in.
The owner of Capital Design (Adam Smith) came to our house (just before the pandemic), to talk to us about our needs (after meeting him at the Home and Garden Show in Chantilly) and was extremely personable both at the show, and at our home. We talked about our special dietary desires (such as 2 dishwashers, cabinets for 2 sets of dishes and the like, and what we envisioned for the kitchen of our dreams (such as a walk- in pantry, where none existed before). Adam took a slew of measurements, and a lot of pictures, talked to us about various options, and various price ranges depending on those options.
In the end, Shannon used her design skills and tools to mock-up a kitchen of our dreams using our existing basic footprint, based on Adam's recommendations. We chose solid wood nice quality cabinetry from Medallion, quartz countertops, new engineered hardwood flooring throughout the kitchen level of the house, and KitchenAid Appliances. They even worked with us to design the double oven and cabinetry at a lower height to accommodate my wife's small stature.
When all was said and done, Adam presented a contract for a fair price and we signed it. The folks at Capital Design then prepared a comprehensive series of documents on our kitchen, with detailed measurements of appliances, cabinets, floors, electrical, plumbing, etc; of which our extremely personable and knowledgeable project manager, Alex, used to oversee the workers over the next few months.
Due to Covid, they sectioned off where they were working in plastic, always wore masks, and only entered and exited thru the garage door, so as to leave us with a safe space for microwaving and eating in our living room area. Over the course of the project, when walls were removed, occasionally they found duct work in the way of planned work (like where our walk-in pantry was supposed to go).
In each case, Adam came over, and he and Alex designed a work-around solution for whatever they uncovered. As time went on, we realized that we might as well go ahead and remodel our powder room while we were at it, and Shannon helped us decide the fixtures needed through Lowes, and they took care of demolition, buying, and installing all of it for a very reasonable price in a change order for adding the powder room.
In addition, when they removed the walls and opened up the kitchen to our family room, it seemed a shame to have a dark brick fireplace room so prominent in the room; therefore, we talked to them about whitewashing the brick, and flanking the fireplace with built-in shelves and cabinets to compliment the beauty of the new kitchen (a fair price was negotiated, and the work was begun).
The workmen Capital Design used were extremely nice and professional and produced outstanding quality work. All this during this Covid Pandemic and the important need to hold safety at a high level to protect us and all of the workmen. All along the project, we had extensive communications with Alex and the Project Team. Adam was involved through the construction.
In the end, we paid a little more than we had originally budgeted (due to the change orders increasing the scope), but my goodness, we have an absolutely beautiful and functional kitchen, dining room, living room, powder room and family room. We will certainly use Capital Design for any future remodeling needs. Sincerely, .Jamie and Martin

The service and the products we received from Capital Design were outstanding! Adam goes above and beyond to make sure his clients are satisfied. I can't say enough good things about this company. Jessica and Shannon were a pleasure to work with. Any time there was any concern on our part about anything, Adam made sure that everything was running smoothly.
They were responsive to our questions long after the job was completed. We LOVE our finished product. We had our master bath and kitchen done by Capital Design and would go back for any other project. This is a first class company!

Adam Smith and the group at Capital Design were a great asset in the remodeling of our kitchen. Adam has 20 years experience in the business and it shows. An exceptional kitchen design takes a tremendous amount of thought and requires a great deal of patience and decision making. Adam and his team were full of valuable advice and ideas, and were well educated on what new equipment and materials are available on the market.
During the design process, Adam listened intently to our thoughts and concerns, and enthusiastically participated in discussions with us. He treated the job very personally, carefully answering every question and giving thoughtful suggestions, all along helping us understand what we were looking for and laying out our kitchen to reflect that. His 3D renderings were super beneficial and helped us easily imagine the finished product and allowed us to make sound, well thought out decisions which resulted in an absolutely beautiful, fully functional, top notch kitchen.
Capital Design worked hard to get us the best price in town, and has been there for us during the installation process ensuring everything goes as planned. We could not imagine a more valuable asset to have assisting us through the kitchen design and remodeling process, and highly recommend Adam and his team at Capital Design!

The Capital Design team and final products are amazing. Options, customer service, and great design consultations is what makes Capital Design the real deal. I've currently worked in the commercial construction industry for over 15 years and have become very used to the high standard of shop drawings and detailed product samples; Capital Design was able to provide that detailed information and much more.
Capital Design provided a very professional experience and still very well priced products. We could not have gotten this great of a product at this great of a price online through big box retail cabinet companies. I have already gone back for my next home remodel and I will continue to use Capital Design for all my residential needs.

The entire Capital Design team deserves 5 Stars! From Adam, Jessica, Shannon, Heath and Travis. There was not one moment during the entire process, from design to completion, where we did not feel like a valued client. Heath and Travis treated our home and our bathroom remodel as if they were working in their own homes. We have worked with more renovation and design companies than we care to remember, and we have to say that Capital Design is, by far, head and shoulders above all of them in every way.
They made us feel important by meeting with us around our schedule. Their design process and presentation blew us away. Their use of technology (CoConstruct app) to communicate and track job progress is cutting edge. The County Inspectors admired and praised the look and workmanship of the job at rough-in and completion. Capital Design exceeded all of our expectations. We can't wait to have them remodel our kitchen and recommend them highly to anyone looking for the best home design and remodeling company in Northern Virginia.
